PTP Theory

Our Theory Book help students "discover" music theory through creative exercises and activities that stimulate their imagination.

These books can be used independently but work best when used in conjunction the The Discovery Piano System repertoire books found [here].

Theory Book 3 in the Discovery Piano System introduces the student to important concepts comprehensively for the late elementary/early intermediate student.

The 86 pages of exercises guide the student to thoroughly understand the introductory pieces in their first music books; but is especially especially geared to work in conjunction to the repertoire books that are part of the Discovery Piano System

Students learn the scales in conjunction with the Circle of 5ths.  They learn to spot intervals from the 2nd through the 6th.  Major and minor arpeggios are covered as well as the chromatic scale.

Teachers are very important to helping students "discover" the theoretical ideas presented in these volumes.  Book 3 contains special Comparison Pages where theoretical concepts are compared through the same composition given in two contrasting versions; for example major and minor, accent shifts.

We have another section, Piano and Percussion, where compositions from their Discovery Piano System Repertoire Books are given rhythm accompaniments to help students develop their rhythmic sense.   We hope they will stimulate you in being a fully engaged participant in helping your students discover music theory.

Theory Book 2 in the Discovery Piano System continues to introduce the student to important concepts comprehensively yet at an introductory level.

The 71 pages of exercises guide the student to thoroughly understand the compositions after their introductory music books in the early elementary level; especially the repertoire books that are part of the Discovery Piano System

Students learn about 6/4 time, about chromatic notes, understanding measures, drawing notes, rests, and clefs, basic intervals up to a 5th, sharps and flats, the notation and sound of basic touches, and the book ends with rhythm exercises where students accompany their pieces with rhythm instruments while the teacher (or another student) plays their basic pieces .... so even a little bit of ensemble is included.

Theory Book 1 in the Discovery Piano System introduces the student to important concepts comprehensively yet at an introductory level.

The 76 pages of exercises guide the student to thoroughly understand the introductory pieces in their first music books; especially the repertoire books that are part of the Discovery Piano System

Students learn to spot tonic and dominant, learn about "key", are given rhythm exercises where they accompany their pieces through rhythm instruments, are given exercises to train their ear to hear sharps and flats.
