Maxim Gorky gives teachers the best guide for writing music for children -- You must write for children in the same way as you do for adults, only better. I hope you will find the compositions on this page interesting, musical and something that is appealing to both children and adults.
VAMP!
Vamp is a jazz term that refers to an improvisation with a series of chords. On this little piece I keep the melody stagnant and alter the bass line always repeating it downward by thirds.

The Wanderings of Autumn's Leaves
This Nocturne contains two main themes; the first theme is repeated three times, each time with more movement and intensity. The second theme, evokes the wanderings of autumn's leaves being tossed about by the winds of fall, This piece is a good piece to prepare students for the mature Nocturnes of Chopin and is of the level of a late intermediate or early advanced student.

Love Awaits the Lady in Waiting
Here's a catchy piece at the the late-elementary level. This composition has the flavor of an ancient middle age love song performed by a travelling troubadour on his lute.

Prelude in A major
This advanced composition is an excellent preparatory piece for a student first Chopin Nocturne. It is a mature sounding compotition with challenges associated with an advanced work. A clear balancing of parts beyond melody vs accompaniment is required throughout this piece. I have used this piece as a chuch offertory successfully.

My Roaming Thoughts
The short musical themes "roam" between major and minor, with each repetition of that theme varied. This constant changing gives a musical picture of "My Roaming Thoughts" A good teaching piece.
